《不學鼯鼠 Be like Flying Squirrel, my friend.》
When I was a child, I heard others talk about a type of squirrel that could fly between the trees. When it got tired, it would dig a hole in a tree to rest. I thought that was cool; it was the flying squirrel.
As I grew up, I read in books that flying squirrels can fly, climb, dig, and swim. However, I discovered that in the eyes of some elderly people, like Xunzi—who is rather old—flying squirrels are a negative example of learning, used to satirize those who do not specialize in their studies.
I often find that these ancient people are quite unreasonable. What do they even understand about flying squirrels? They have never flown, yet they criticize flying squirrels for not flying high enough. "You are not a squirrel; how can you know the joy of a flying squirrel?" If people could choose how they want to live, why can't flying squirrels?
Having walked this path for over ten years, somehow, I have turned myself into a flying squirrel. I do many things, but it seems I haven't mastered any of them. But I don’t want to stop; each flight brings new scenery. If having many skills doesn’t hinder you, how could a flying squirrel run out of tricks?
"Five skills it has. It can fly but cannot cross a house, can climb but cannot reach the treetop, can swim but cannot cross a valley, can dig but cannot hide its body, can walk but cannot precede others."
At night, I often wonder, the more I learn, will I fly further? Is it that this world doesn't understand flying squirrels? Or is it that I haven't understood this world?
