Thinking Circus

Arne Mannott

What exactly characterizes circus art, what significance does it have and what could even be an attempt to define circus? In the documentary „Thinking Circus“, various European circus artists give their answers to these questions. Not only do different approaches to this art form become clear, but above all there are also shared basic ideas about the circus. Solidarity, sharing and passing on knowledge and the value of community in the circus are experiencing a new appreciation.

In Black Magic two magicians collaborate closely together, despite being physically distant.
Exploring techniques of black theatre and double exposure – reminiscent of 19th-century trick photography- they seamlessly merge traditional methods and modern technology,
allowing for the execution of illusions in real time, blurring the boundaries between ‘virtual’ and ‘real’.

What is left

Starting from the frontal classroom arrangement, “What is left” deals with spatial structures that shape human communication culture. It is familiar to us from theaters, the waiting situation at counters, the hierarchy in a courtroom, in school or in church, as well as from advertising screens in subway stations. All these spaces demand and structure the gaze attention of bodies in space. The performance is dedicated to these subtle and not always perceptible architectural structures, that create a field of tension between space and body, communication and power.
