In one sentence, this is a story about:
'A devout Muggle who does everything he can to change his fate and gain supernatural abilities.'
But what happens if a Muggle loses faith in the gods?
Does the story just end before it starts?
Growing up in a temple,
I always dreamed of being chosen by the gods.
I wanted to be a spirit medium or a Taoist master
— just someone special.
All I wanted was to have powers.
I practiced hand seals,
memorized chants,
learned the steps for temple processions,
played traditional instruments,
immersed myself in the gods' stories,
and joined countless ceremonies...
Even with all my devotion,
they never answered.
I'm just a Muggle.
I can't see them,
hear them,
or connect with them.
A lot of the time,
I just want to know:
Is my devotion insufficient,
or do You simply not exist?
If You're not,
then what's left to believe in?
